Thanks for the video. I look at several factors. Parts and the dealer network is a big deal for me and that gives Toro and JD the edge in my view. My friend just yesterday broke an idler pulley on his JD compact tractor deck. We had the part today and it's back up and working. Before I buy a machine I check the parts views on the manufacturers site to see if major parts are available, it's hard to beat JD on this even in their cheaper machines which I stay away from. BTW the 48" and 54" decks are fabricated and not pressed, I don't like the 42" deck either, I wouldn't by a stamped deck machine, they are 12 ga. , the 48" and 54" are 10 ga., that's a lot more metal. I don't know if they use different spindles though.

  • @thomasm9139

Shopping local dealers, my first choice was Gravely but they didn't offer a 54" deck, a deal killer for me. So my next choice was the Bad Boy ZT Elite, didn't have one in stock and was going to charge an extra 250.00 for delivery so I walked away. Not a fan of the Husqvarna but the dealership was close by so I went in just to see what model was comparable and the cost. Well half the showroom floor was covered with a mower I never heard of, it was Spartan. After thinking about it and a little research I purchased the Spartan RZ 54, for the price and build quality it was enough to sell me.

Glad that I found this discussion. I was considering purchasing a new JD Z345M 42in. 22HP Zero-Turn mower because I can pick it up for a great price ($812.00!). Hi, somewhat surprised by your opinion on the JD 335E, the reason being that I have had mine for many years and have accumulated 3500 hours on it. I have no complaints and have not had to do any other maintenance that oil and filter changes and of cause blade changes. I use it 2 hours every week in the grass season (here in Demark that is late April to end September). But nice to hear what I should be aware of.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. My Gator hasn't charged since I got it, so it's been getting a top-off from a battery charger every 2-3 days and hasn't been very helpful after dark, only being able to use the lights to scoot back to its 'bedroom' if I get caught out late. Wound up walking in with the battery one night after chasing goats. That was about a week ago and my search for a DIY solution led me to your video. I was getting 38vac out of the stator, but the 25A fuse on the regulator line was blown. Ordered a regulator off of Amazon, installed it, and went back to a 20A fuse. I also put a little dash-mounted volt meter on the switched side of the key, and it's showing 13.4 for the most part, and 12.8 when I run the lights. (I installed the voltmeter before doing the regulator swap--simply because it arrived a day earlier--and found a stead 11.5V when running, no lights, didn't even bother checking with lights on ;) ) Thanks again for sharing the information!

So, you're telling me that a 1200 watt constant generator running at 100 percent power uses far less fuel than a, say, 7200 watt generator producing 1200 watts at just over 16 percent power? Uh uh. Not possible.

Why are you running all of that air in the tires? The front tire says 44 psi I think but the owners manual and the quick maintenance guide under the seat says 15 psi in the front and 10 psi in the rear So which is correct??????

Using the mower as a residential mower you will never run over 500 hrs in 36 months. Bobcat takes the warranty class. If you use it for commercial then the Kubota wins hands down. Then again you would be buying a commercial unit.

Thanks for this great advice. One thing about the oil filter is that I always use the OEM filters, so just judging by the brand, it is not very accurate. A good way to tell instead is the color of the label. The label on the filter used to be yellow, and they are now white. If the filter is the older yellow sticker version, then they probably never changed it.

Question: You checked that you have power at the white wire, but not watch it off and on with the key. Also, did you verify that you have a continuous ground? Is the ground to engine ground or separate wire?

    • @Mechanical_Mind

The black wire for the solenoid is grounded to the engine. The white wire should get power when the key is in the "on" position.

I had an L100, one of the spindles died because there are no grease nipples on them! Then the motor constantly played up with the decompression problem plus I had to adjust the valves at best once a fortnight and at worst once a week. The deck cracked up and finally fell to pieces. JD are doing themselves no favours selling this rubbish and I put a Chinese motor on mine, stripped away all the unwanted rubbish, added a tow bar and it now serves as a better than a wheel barrow way of moving stuff around or dragging a 50L spray unit around. The mower I replaced it with was a Bob Cat contractor zero turn and 8 years on it still starts first time every time and is as solid as a rock.

JD 915B when clutch engages it seems to be putting excess strain on engine and rpm not as high as it should be. This mower has a 60” deck swapped by the dealer when purchased 10 years ago. May have added stress to the clutch. 648hrs on the machine. Do you think it is the bearings or worn out clutch that I should just replace? Great video!

It's not that simple when it comes to actually putting air into it. You should leave the inner part of valve stem out to get a good shot of air to seal the bead to the wheel . If you don't you have to fiddle with the tire till you get it to seal off. That's the easy part removing and replacing tire, it's seating of the bead that can get you stuck.

Great video! Your video is very informational for folks who are just starting to get into back up generator power. However I’m in a different league almost onto itself. I’m a power lineman for a living so I’m very aware of back up generators. I have the best of the best because I don’t want my neighbors to know we have power. My neighbors are very close by & to have an obnoxious generator running all the time will make quick enemies of my neighbors. I have the flag ship model of the Honda inverter line. The EU 7000is. It’s fuel injected & burns way less fuel than even your smaller generator at half load. It’s comparable in size to your larger Champion. When the Honda is on it is super quiet at 58 decibels on regular & 54 decibels on economy mode. It’s rated at 5500 watts with a surge to 7000 watts. I have personally tested mine to 9200 watts surge & it runs fine. With everything on including the 2-1/2 ton central air I’m using 3750 watts. I have a soft start kit for my A/C. I keep 111 gallons of gasoline at my house incase of a power outage. That’s enough gasoline for twenty days. The Honda burns 11 gallons in 42 hours at half load. That’s almost two full days between fill ups. I bought an auxiliary fuel tank that holds 6 gallons. I refill my auxiliary without shutting my generator off. I have 15 of the 5 gallon No Spill fuel jugs. Not 4 or 5. The longest I’ve been out of power was after storm Isais a few years ago. I was busy working storm work getting everyone else’s power back on. I knew my family was safe at home. Maybe you can do a review on inverter generators? Most people are unaware. You almost need an inverter to power your home. Every appliance today has a micro-processor in it. Without clean 60 cycle power they may not power up? Or if they do? They might damage it with dirty power off a conventional generator. The same adage exists. Save money on a generator & replace all your appliances after a long duration outage. OR buy an inverter generator & keep your appliances. The choice is yours?

I've been mowing commercially for 20 years. I've never used anything but SCAG. I've looked at every other mower and just laugh. Some of the BS i see makes me laugh. Something nobody ever thinks of is a black seat. You can fry an egg on a black seat in middle of summer. Now you're going to sit on that? You can go into anyone of my neighborhoods i mow in and tell exactly which ones i take care of. I promise you there isn't a better mower than a SCAG. Yes they have flaws but nothing cuts like a SCAG.

Good technique and informative. My issue has always been that when it comes time to either change a tire or insert a tube from a punctured tire...the bead break NEVER goes that smoothly. I have never had a bead break with just a few taps of a sledge. it takes a jack pressing down from a trailer hitch on a truck, hammers, screw drivers, and last time, the bucket of a tractor to get that bead off the rim. Unless you have a brand new, supple rubber tire, they have never released quickly for me. I have yet to find an at home remedy to that bead break trouble.
